2 Xenophon, Honourable Maurice Ashley [Translator] Cyropaedia or The Institution of Cyrus
B. B. Hopkins & Co. 1810 LEATHER_BOUND Good
B. B. Hopkins & Co; Philadelphia, 1810. Hardcover. Fair to Good only, front board hanging by one thread, rear board cracked but holding w/heavy foxing to pre-lims evening out to light foxing throughout, small neat ink name to title page, in a scuffed and edgeworn plain[gilt lines to spine only, missing labels] full brown calf binding. The Cyropaedia (or Cyropedia) is a "partly fictional biography" of Cyrus the Great, written in the early 4th century BC by the Athenian gentleman-soldier, and student of Socrates, Xenophon of Athens. Aspects of it would become a model for medieval writers of the genre known as "mirrors for princes". In turn it was a strong influence upon the most well-known but atypical of these, machiavelli's's The Prince, which was an important influence in the rejection of medieval political thinking, and the development of modern politics. However, unlike most "mirrors of princes", and like The Prince, whether or not the Cyropaedia was really intended to describe an ideal ruler is a subject of debate. Early greek literature for your brain! We pack securely and ship daily w/delivery confirmation on every book. The picture on the listing page is of the actual book for sale. Additional Scan(s) are available for any item, please inquire.
